After quite a long development period, like buses, three new pieces have come along at once. Since the beginning of the year I’ve completed pieces for soundinitiative, Zubin Kanga, and a commission for the Only Connect festival in Stavanger. The first two are being performed soon, but the piece for Norway was for a supergroup combining asamisimasa, Insimul, Kitchen Orchestra and organist Nils Henrik Asheim. It was performed last week at the Stavanger Konsertuhus, which is an amazing space. Hopefully there will be some documentation soon.
The piece has a preposterously long title again, and this one I’m really struggling to remember. For the record, it is having to carry out the repetitive, mind-numbingly boring but still very necessary tasks required to manage increasingly complicated processes of production. It’s another quote from David Graeber’s Bullshit Jobs, and focuses – as the title suggests – on purposeless work. In the piece asamisimasa give instructions that control the playback of drones and live recordings made by the other two ensembles, interrupted occasionally by the organ, but with nobody in overall control or really knowing what the outcome of their decisions are or why they are making them. The aim is for it to be a little like working in an organisation.
