Today I completed the daily photography project I’ve been undertaking for the past year. Each day, I’ve taken a picture of the sky and a picture of the ground and uploaded it to a website as a collage. The project, titled looking up / looking down has been quite time-consuming, although mostly it’s involved trying to remember to take each day’s pictures. The results show that on average I reckon we’ve have about 60% of the past year as grey and cloudy, which kind of bears out what you’d expect in the UK. Most of the looking down pictures are of tarmac, with a few more textured bits of gravel. After a while I settled on tarmac: despite the potential variety, it’s surprising how grey and dull it is in reality. In order to remember, each day I set a reminder on my phone, and generally took the pictures outside my house, dropping the children at school, or on my walk from the car park at work. There were a few more exotic locations, particularly the road behind (and sky above) the 17th green at St Andrews. It doesn’t get much more exciting than taking pictures of famous roads as a part of an obsessive project.
It’s going to be very strange not taking the daily pictures, although I’m quite looking forward to the break. It’s going to be replaced by a slightly different project though as tomorrow we’re collecting our new puppy….
To see all the photos, go to looking up or looking down. Looking back, I seem to have made a few mistakes with uploading the photos to the correct site. Oh well, it adds to the excitement.
