PhD supervision

I supervise PhDs in composition and experimental music at Bath Spa University, particularly related to the following areas:

  • open forms
  • group behaviours (in music)
  • games (in relation to music)
  • modularity
  • multipart series
  • notation (especially verbal scores)
  • distributed composition

We have a really great group of PhD composers at the moment exploring open forms in a variety of ways, and if you are working in any of these areas and interested in joining us, please get in touch. I also convene the Open Scores Lab which creates a space for discussion, linking PhD and staff research and practice. This is part of the Centre for Cultural and Creative Industries which encompasses all our research in Music at Bath Spa. We run a weekly Creative Sound Forum with a mix of visiting speakers, staff and PhD researchers talking about their work.  Recent visitors related to these research areas include Peter Ablinger, Ryoko Akama, Joanna Bailie, Laura Bowler, Gavin Bryars, Aaron Cassidy, Laurence Crane, Cathy von Eck, Jem Finer, Kathy Hinde, Tom Johnson, Liza Lim, Michael Maierhof, Cassandra Miller, Claudia Molitor, Phill Niblock, Tim Parkinson, Michael Pisaro, David Pocknee, Howard Skempton, Matthew Shlomowitz, Jennifer Walshe and Amnon Wolman. There are good interdisciplinary links with our Dance and Performing Arts departments, as well as with the Centre for Creative Computing. There is also a very active MA/MRes Composition and MA Sound, as well as a thriving undergraduate composition department.

If you would like to apply for a PhD, have a look at the Graduate School application information. You can also email me if you have any questions, and if you would like to visit or talk via video call, that’s also fine.
