on bare trees is a variation on my orchestral piece things whole and not whole. It uses a similar cueing mechanism where players respond to sounds made by players of their choice, but here they proceed along a common melodic line, pausing when all players reach the end of each sequence. The title makes reference to flocks of bird taking off for short flights before alighting on a tree. It was first performed by Plus Minus Ensemble, Material and City University Experimental Music Group at Performance Space, City University, London, on 8 April 2014.
