I’ve been making programme cards for the Music Thing Modular Workshop System over the summer, and have just made a set of pieces, titled the purpose of a system is what it does, that you can play on it, using my cards and those by others. The pieces are all bespoke for the system, but the processes are aligned with my interest in institutional processes, and especially the way we don’t always have a lot of control over them. So the pieces all use the fact that modular synths allow you to get close to something, but have a habit of eluding repetition. They all feature a patch diagram and some instructions for how to manipulate the particular configuration for each piece. I’ve made some first realisations but hopefully others will give them a go. Very curious to see that.
I’m thinking a lot about modular synths at the moment, and it’s only fairly recently that viewing them as slightly nonsensical systems opens up some ways to link them with my other work. I wonder what I’ve let myself in for.
The videos are below, and the scores are right at the end.
